A recent WiFi upgrade project in Hale Barns demonstrating how network design, access point placement and business-grade infrastructure can dramatically improve wireless coverage throughout a large multi-level property.
Many people assume poor WiFi performance is caused by slow broadband. In reality, the internet connection is often only part of the story.
Recently Rowan Systems was asked to investigate WiFi issues at a large residential property in Hale Barns. The homeowner had already invested in a Starlink internet connection capable of delivering speeds in excess of 300Mbps.
Despite this, wireless performance varied significantly throughout the property. Some rooms achieved excellent speeds while others suffered from weak coverage and unreliable connectivity.
The property featured multiple floors, dense construction materials and areas where WiFi signals were heavily attenuated.
The challenge was not the broadband connection itself, but ensuring reliable coverage throughout the entire property.
A detailed site survey was carried out to identify the causes of poor wireless performance.
Testing confirmed that the Starlink connection itself was performing well, consistently delivering high-speed internet access. However, significant signal loss was occurring between floors and in several key living areas.
The survey identified coverage gaps, heavy attenuation through construction materials and inconsistent roaming between wireless access points.
These findings confirmed that the issue was not broadband speed, but how the wireless network was distributed throughout the property.
The existing network was redesigned using TP-Link Omada business-grade networking equipment.
Additional wireless coverage points were installed and network settings were optimised to improve coverage and roaming performance.
Particular attention was paid to the challenging floor layout and areas where signal strength had previously been poor.
The objective was to create reliable whole-property coverage rather than simply achieving high speed test results in a single room.
Following the upgrade, wireless coverage was significantly improved throughout the property.
Previously problematic areas now benefit from reliable connectivity, while the Starlink connection can be fully utilised across the home.
The result is a stable network capable of supporting home working, streaming services, smart home devices and everyday internet use.
Reliable WiFi starts with good design, not simply faster broadband.
If your internet speed is good but WiFi performance varies around your home or business, the issue may be network design rather than broadband speed.
